Condom Adhesion - Skin Adhesive
Preparing the skin - Meticulous hygiene and constant observation of skin condition are essential when preparing the skin for adhesion. For extra skin protection we recommend Preventox skin protection fluid.
As well as Self-Adhesive Condom Catheters, Manfred Sauer produce a variety of adhesive tapes and skin adhesives. Click to go to store

Skin Adhesives
For more than 30 years Sauer skin adhesives have been used successfully for the fixation of urinary condoms for all types of skin conditions. All are water-resistant, allowing you to wear the condom in the bath or when swimming.
- The efficiency of adhesion varies according to the composition of the skin adhesive used.
- The water resistance of the skin adhesive allows you to wear the condom in the bath or when swimming without impairing the adhesion strength. However, staying a long time in a hot bath, may reduce the adhesion strength.
- The skin friendliness is achieved by adding skin agents to the skin adhesive. This makes round-the-clock wear possible.
- The removal of the condom when using a latex adhesive does not usually leave any residue on the skin since the condom and the skin adhesive complement each other. Synthetic adhesives and condoms (including silicone self-adhesive condoms) tend to leave
a residue after the condom has been taken off. This should be removed with a non-alcohol based adhesive remover or ideally soaked off in the bath or shower.
- The tube with pipette applicator allows simple and clean application of the adhesive.
Sauer Latex-based Skin Adhesive
Composition is based on current dermatological knowledge. The basic materials (Mastic Crepe and Heptan) provide adhesion while the additional materials (Lanolin and Zinc Oxide) care for the skin. This combination makes round-the-clock wear possible without occurrence of skin problems. There are three options:
- Sauer Skin Adhesive - Original Can be used without problems in almost all cases. Provides absolutely reliable adhesion.
- Sauer Skin Adhesive – 2% Resin Based on “Original” but with 12% resin to give high adhesive quality. Pay particular attention to the condition of the skin.
- Sauer Skin Adhesive – 12% Resin Based on “Original” but with 12% resin to give high adhesive quality. Pay particular attention to the condition of the skin.
Sauer Synthetic Skin Adhesive
In case of latex allergy or when adhesion strength is not adequate we advise a synthetic skin adhesive. This adhesive is generally stronger and therefore more abrasive to the skin. Use only when you have serious adhesion problems.
- Sauer Skin Adhesive - Synthetic Contains no latex or silicone. Comes in a glass bottle with a brush applicator in the lid, or in a tube with a pipette applicator.
If your skin is delicate, we recommend you use some skin protection such as Preventox Wipes before applying the synthetic adhesive. Click to go to store
Choosing the right adhesive
We cannot know which adhesive is the best for you, as each skin type reacts differently. First try the proven “Original” adhesive. If you are not getting satisfactory results then try an alternative.
We recommend that you try any new adhesive product on a neutral area of skin such as the inside of your wrist or the back of your hand to ensure that there are no allergic reactions. When
using adhesives with stronger adhesion strength, always check your skin condition carefully!

Three Options
You have three options when applying condom catheters:
Skin Adhesive - We are still convinced this is the most reliable method. Skin adhesive provide the safest bond. Unlike the self adhesive condom, you can determine for yourself the quantity you want, where you want to put it and over what area, avoiding any red marks etc. Water resistance allows you to wear the condom in the bath or when swimming. If you are allergic to latex, avoid latex based skin adhesives.
Self-adhesive Catheters - A self-adhesive film inside the condom allows you to put it on quicker and more easily. It also gives a reliable adhesion between the condom and the skin. This is certainly the most convenient option
but our experience shows that it is not as reliable as a separate liquid skin adhesive.
Adhesive Tape - Double sided adhesive tapes can be very useful where there is inadequate skin area for adhesion. Some people consider it to be a “cleaner” solution than skin adhesive. However, because of the thickness of the tape it is not possible to get as secure and comfortable fit as with a separate skin adhesive. It is also helpful in the care of the elderly, for bedridden patients and in intensive care units. It is also good for children and for all other cases where there is inadequate skin area for adhesion.
