How to Apply Self-adhesive Condoms
As well as Self-Adhesive Condom Catheters, Manfred Sauer produce a variety of adhesive tapes and skin adhesives.
Pull over the protective cloth so that the pubic hair does not get glued together and make the adhesion process more difficult.
Unroll the condom at least two folds before you start applying (with a small penis, you may have to unroll 3 times). This is to creat a buffer zone between the penis and the tip of the condom. If the condom is difficult to unroll we suggest that you stretch the connecting tube gently.
Put the condom on the foreskin (if uncircumcised) without smoothing the foreskin back and carry on unrolling until you come to the end of the talcum powdered zone. The unrolled part of the condom should be roughly in the middle of the penis. When unrolling further, you come to the adhesive zone. From the start, make sure that you unroll the condom evenly. If it is unrolled unevenly towards one side, it may stick and be almost impossible to unroll further.
Unroll the condom further.
Avoid any folds in the adhesive zone. The adhesive part is about 3 cm wide. The remaining 2cm of the condom is uncoated.
Check the position of the condom, then press it carefully around and against the penis.
To avoid pressure marks, or if the penis retracts, you can remove the remaining rubber ring behind the adhering area by cutting into it or pulling it right off.
Tip - To practice putting on the self-adhesive condom we provide a small “thumb-size” with a diameter of 22mm. You can use it to test the separate steps of the procedure on your thumb.
Connecting the condom to a leg bag
Always fit the condom first and attach the leg bag to the leg (adjusting the length of the inlet tube if necessary) before connecting the condom to the leg bag. This helps to prevent any twists in the tubing. Connect the outlet tube of the condom to the inlet connector of the leg bag and press all around gently. This connection can be made easier by wetting the plastic connector before the connection.

Three Options
You have three options when applying condom catheters:
Skin Adhesive - We are still convinced this is the most reliable method. Skin adhesive provide the safest bond. Unlike the self adhesive condom, you can determine for yourself the quantity you want, where you want to put it and over what area, avoiding any red marks etc. Water resistance allows you to wear the condom in the bath or when swimming. If you are allergic to latex, avoid latex based skin adhesives.
Self-adhesive Catheters - A self-adhesive film inside the condom allows you to put it on quicker and more easily. It also gives a reliable adhesion between the condom and the skin. This is certainly the most convenient option
but our experience shows that it is not as reliable as a separate liquid skin adhesive.
Adhesive Tape - Double sided adhesive tapes can be very useful where there is inadequate skin area for adhesion. Some people consider it to be a “cleaner” solution than skin adhesive. However, because of the thickness of the tape it is not possible to get as secure and comfortable fit as with a separate skin adhesive. It is also helpful in the care of the elderly, for bedridden patients and in intensive care units. It is also good for children and for all other cases where there is inadequate skin area for adhesion.
