Bailey Retractable Monofilament

The World’s First Retractable Monofilament and one of only two monofilaments that is recommended for use in clinical practice according to an independent report published in Diabetes Care Journal July 2000.

This Report stated that:
“The accuracy of monofilaments to produce a buckling force of 10g (equivalent to 5.07) varies among manufacturers. Bailey Instruments Monofilaments were among the most accurate with 100% buckling within plus or minus 1.0g of 10g. Longevity test on Bailey Instruments Monofilaments demonstrated that 80% continued to buckle within 10% of 10g after 100 compressions, well ahead of Semmes Weinsten and Timesco monofilaments.”
Conclusions of the Report were that “ Monofilaments made by Bailey Instruments….are recommended for use in clinical practice.”

North Coast Medical monofilaments (Semmes-Weinstein) may operate differently in the US because of different environmental conditions such as differences in humidity. Timesco/Sensory Testing Systems monofilaments were neither accurate enough nor CE marked to recommend their use in the UK. Longevity and recovery testing suggest that each monofilament will survive usage on ~10 patients before needing a recovery time of 24 hours.

Monofilaments are designed to test the loss of protective sensation in the feet of diabetic patients. The Bailey Monofilament is unaffected by atmospheric moisture, allowing total reliability worldwide, without significant change in force readings due to environmental conditions.
